A few years ago, we started a family tradition of getting each person in the family an ornament while we are on our summer vacation. For example, last year we got adorable trolley cars in San Francisco. This year on our vacation we did not have much time to shop for ornaments, and when we did get a chance to look, we couldn't find anything we liked. I checked online for ornaments of the Nauvoo temple, but they were a bit expensive, so I just got one of those for Scott and me. Anyway, I have been pondering for a few months if we could make some kind of ornament that could represent our vacation. Finally, this week, I put something together. Each of us got a "Prairie Diamond Ring" at the blacksmith shop in Nauvoo. (They are just horse-shoe nails bent into a ring shape.) Then I stole some awesome photos of the Nauvoo temple off the internet. The children each chose a photo and a color of ribbon for me to use. Add some large glass marbles, and this is what I came up with. The rings from the blacksmith shop are tied into the ribbon bow.

Way cool ornaments, what a fun family tradition!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you, Brian. Thanks, best wishes to your family too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tiffany! We still need to get together and make cards! :)
I've been doing this for a few years and love it when December comes around and I have all these mementos of our vacations. I wish I had done it when my children were small. Since I'm now raising my niece and nephew I have a "do-over" and can do some things I "forgot" to do with the first time around!
ReplyDeleteI didn't get our tree up until right before Christmas and I hate taking it down so soon. It's beautiful but I didn't get as much enjoyment out of it this year as I'd have liked.
When my kids were young, long before digital photography, I used to have four copies of each "good" photo made and was pretty good about making a book for myself and one for each of the three boys as I went along. No time for all that now but it was nice later when I could hand them a photo album of their childhood already completed!
